Litzman's Next Step: Reduction in Hospital Parking Fees

Parking fees in hospital parking lots are rather high- a fact that contributes to an added financial burden on the ill and their families. Many hospitals charge a parking fee of 20 shekel a day.

Health Minister Yakov Litzman has initiated a process to reduce hospital parking fees by nearly 30% - to an average rate of 14 shekel a day. At this time he is working with the Minister of the Treasury to plan a 30 million shekel budget to compensate the hospitals on the lost revenues.

Litzman told "Yisrael Hayom", "We are talking about an important social process for the benefit of the ill and their families. There is no reason that a hospital stay should bring about unnecessary expenses."

A day of parking will now be counted from the time of arrival and not be figured according to the secular calendar date. In other words from now someone who arrives in the evening and leaves after midnight will no longer be charged for two days of parking.

Those hospitalized over 14 days will receive free parking.

The parking reforms will not go into effect in hospitals in the centers of the large cities out of concern that others (who are looking for cheap parking but are not visiting a hospitalized family member) will take advantage of the new laws.
