A cache of silver coins was unearthed this past April in an archeological dig near Modiin, under the initiative of the municipality of Moddin-Maccabim-Reut. These coins date back 2,140 years to the year 126 B.C E., and contain both shekalim as well as half shekalim.
According to the administrator of the dig, "It seems that the buried coins belonged to a Jew that his money with the hope that he would return to claim it. It appears that he never came back."
The coins bear the image of King Antiochus the 7th and of his brother Demetrius the 2cnd.
