Hamas executed 3 men today including a policemen employed by the West Bank based PA. The executions were carried out without the approval of President Abbas as is stipulated by Palestinian law. Gaza's general prosecutor's office said that the men were killed in order "to achieve public deterrence and block crime".
The BBC was told that the execution was attended by the attorney general, representatives of Palestinian factions and the families of the murder victims. The UN had called upon Hamas to cancel the executions. Amnesty International condemned the executions and urged Hamas not to carry out any more.
PA attorney general Ahmed Brak told Reuters news agency that " carrying out the executions represents a flagrant violation of the Palestinian basic law," since according to the law the president has to ratify death sentences.
