Israeli Bachur Arrested in Belgium

When an Israeli bachur returned to Belgium Friday after already having exhausted the 3 month limit on his previous trip he was arrested by Belgian authorities.

In Belgium foreign nationals are only permitted to stay in the country for up to 3 months. The bachur in question had already exhausted the 3 month limit and had even stayed too long on his previous trip. When he returned this past Friday his breaking of the law was noted and he was arrested.

Askanim in Antwerp expended much effort in trying to secure his release for Shabbos but were not successful. After much intervention they were at least able to persuade the authorities to allow them to send the bachur kosher food for Shabbos.

The bachur returned to Eretz Yisrael today. He is forbidden from entering Belgium for the next six months.

The Rabanim of the kehillos the Bechadrey is in contact with has requested that those wanting to visit Belgium familiarize themselves with the laws and refrain from trying to outsmart the system.
