The fire in Yerushalayim is not abating. 13 firefighting jets are working to extinguish the fire that broke out in the Ramot Forest this morning. 60 homes in Ramot have been evacuated. One person is being treated for smoke inhalation.
Officials from KKL-JNF have estimated that the fire broke out in two different locations, in the Ramot Forest and in the Cedar Valley. The fire later spread to Ramot, Gilo and Mevasseret Zion.
The fire is now centered in the Jerusalem Corridor close to Romema. Evacuations are beginning on Rechov Panim Meiros. 60 homes in Ramot have been evacuated as well as 5 buildings in Gilo and the homes closest to the forest in Mevasseret Zion.
Bechadrey spoke with Ramot resident Shuki Monkotovitz who reported that he hosed down the gas tanks near his building to prevent them from exploding in the heat. A number of explosions have already been heard in the neighborhood.
"Thick smoke is enveloping the entire neighborhood. Burning embers are flying everywhere. Apartments near the forest have suffered extensive damage, gardens and pergolas have been destroyed.
"My apartment is not adjacent the forest but I am not taking any chances. I sent my wife and children to my parent's home until the situation is under control. My friends and I are members of the Arzei Ramot Kehilla. We have joined forces with fire fighters and have helped to evacuate the elderly. "
