Harav Yitzchak Yosef said that his father Harav Ovadia didn't go to Meron until the age of 42.
"The Litvish sit and learn on Lag Baomer. Sefardim are drawn after the chassidim- but one does not have to travel to Meron. It is bittul Torah.
The Arizal had to travel with his son for a Chalakah (first haircut), but who said that one has to travel very year? It ruins the entire atmosphere in the kollelim. It isn't necessary. It is preferable to learn Torah.
Bachurim should ask their masgiach and Rosh Yeshiva about travelling. Not everyon needs to go. If Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was with us today he would say, "learn a daf gamarah, and don't ruin your learning seder. {Going to Meron} is not considered mitzvas hayom."
