Harav Shteinman Tells MK's: Agree Only if there is not impact on Yiddishkeit

Harav Aharon Leib Shteinman well remembers Avigdor Lieberman's prolonged struggles against the charedi population when he advised the Degel representatives to only give their approval to the expansion of the coalition, "as long as there will be no damage done to Judasim".

Harav Shteinman Tells MK's: Agree Only if there is not impact on Yiddishkeit

"Agree only if there will be no damage done the Judaism." Bringing Avigdor Leiberman into the government is likely to only have a negative impact on charedim. The most worrying point would be the possibility of that Leiberman will have the ability to freely vote regarding topics of state and religion.

Netanyahu updated the charedi representatives about the process. He didn't ask their permission or agreement.

Gafni and Maklev went last night to update Harav Shteinman on the latest political developments and to receive his decision on the charedi stance.

Harav Shteinman's answer pinpointed in one sentence the problem with Leiberman when he said, "you can include Leiberman if you can be certain, "that there will not be any negative impact on Yiddishkeit."

In a political sense Leiberman hasn't made any real impact on the Israeli public aside for opening a Pandora's box legitimizing the changing of the status quo with regard to religion. As the emissary of non-Jewish Immigrants in Israel, he has fought for years against Judaism.

He has fought to allow the sale of pork in public stores, he fought against the status quo that Jews marry within the context of the Rabbanut, he has even fought the concept of marriage altogether, and he has fought against maintaining conversion guidelines. And he has sullied the charedim by turning them into "extremists" that supposedly force secular Jews to live like them.
.
It's true that all his battles ended up being just a lot of words and no actions- but the bottom line is that Leiberman has unsettled the long standing agreement that this is a Jewish State with a Jewish character.

Can anyone promise that there won't be any damage done to Yiddishkeit now?
Can anyone promise that when Netanyahu will want to give public recognition to the Reform – that Leiberman will protest?
