Notwithstanding all the denunciations heard last week: The negotiations to widen the Government are continuing in full force. Herzog’s followers are determined to get results to counteract Yachimovich and Peretz, Herzog is expected to soften his opposition to Livni by offering ministries. That is, if Netanyahu doesn’t meet his demands.

Although at the end of last week Herzog said that there was no real progress in widening of the Government and he was chastised by members of his own party for even carrying out such contacts, it was revealed on Sunday that Herzog, chairman of the Hamachneh Hazioni party is holding secret talks with the aim of joining the Netanyahu government.

According to Haaretz, Yitzchak “Bougie” Herzog is not fazed by the opposition within his own party by leaders Shelley Yachimovich and Amir Peretz who started attacking him at the end of last week. Yachimovich managed to tell the press last night that although Herzog was quite interested in joining the Government, it was the job of his party members to stop him.

As of now, Herzog’s partner, Chairman of the Hatnua party Zipi Livni is still opposed to joining the Government. Haaretz revealed that Herzog has offered her party two ministerial positions – an act that might sweeten the opposition to the move.

The main disagreement between Netanyahu and Herzog which is stymying the widening of the Government is political. According to Ben Kaspit in this morning’s Maariv, Herzog demands a clear policy statement from Netanyahu and even steps for peace with the Palestinians along with a settlement freeze.
