It has been released for publication that a Hamas terrorist who has belonged to the Gaza military faction for ten years has been arrested. Much information has been gleaned about Hamas activities in tunnel excavation from his interrogation.

Machmud Atonah, a 29-year-old from Jabalia, was arrested at the beginning of April, 2016 after crossing the Israel border fence with two knives in his possession. In an interrogation by the General Security Services it was found that he had planned to kill any soldiers or citizens he could find.

Atonah supplied considerable information to the investigators on tunnel routes in the Northern Gaza Strip; on Hamas’ methods in excavating the tunnels, on Hamas’ use of private houses and institutions in which it starts tunnels as well as its methods and the material it uses.

During the interrogation, Atonah specified many places where excavations were being carried out as well as tunnel shafts designated for use by the Nachba (Hamas’ elite unit) for attacks and warfare against Israel. Atonah said that Hamas has constructed a camouflaged chain of tunnels to move both fighters and their equipment. The chain includes rooms to rest equipped with showers and places to eat in order to improve the Hamas fighters’ living conditions.

Atonah named many Hamas activists who worked with him in the Eastern regiment of the Hamas Northern division. In addition, he supplied information about the use of activists’ and citizens’ homes to store weapons and ammunition.
