The Jewish community of Argentina is shocked and horrified by the news of the break in that took place in the middle of the night on Shabbos. The life of Harav Shmuel Aryeh Levin, Rosh Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim Argentina was threatened.
The Rabbi relives the events in an interview with Bchadrey Charedim,” At 3:00 a.m. unidentified people entered my bedroom and began to scream and threaten my life with a knife. They didn’t come to steal anything- they came to frighten us. They beat my wife, injuring her lightly. The door was locked with a key. I don’t know how they got it. They must have picked the lock.
“At first I thought that is must have been one of my neighbors, perhaps they needed something. Then I realized that it was intruders. I got up and cried out,” What! What happened?” They said that they came to threaten my life. I was scared, completely overwhelmed. The police came to investigate, take finger prints in the morning and check the security cameras. They are doing their best to locate the suspects. “
When asked who he thought is behind this he answered,” It’s hard to say but I think that they were sent by the Reform and Conservative Movements here in Argentina. .. they are trying to pressure me to allow them to join the leadership of the Jewish community, and to make reforms in the Rabbanut . The Conservative and Reform think that I will come to an agreement with them and allow them in but nothing will help them. The Jewish Kehila is run according to Halacha. I told them that we will not sit with them in any shape or form. In addition to all the problems we have with the Reform they are also informers who get people in trouble with the courts. “I will not sit with informers.”
Just a few hours before Shabbos elections to the umbrella organization of the Jewish community, set to take place on Sunday were canceled due to legal pressure by the conservative and Reform movements in Buenos Aires. The Conservative and Reform communities are having trouble coming to terms wit the fact that they were not able to enter the elections due to their small numbers. They are heavily outnumbered by Orthodox voters and so they resulted to other means. They exerted pressure from within the court system instead by prevailing upon a judge to cancel the lections all together.
