Bchadrei Chareidim has a dramatic revelation: Harav Gershon Edelstein, Rosh Yeshiva Ponevezh and member of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah surprised Health Minister Yakov Litzman yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, when he presented him with a peace making proposal that would relive the tensions between the leadership of Degel Hatorah and Agudas Yisrael.
In the past the courts of Harav Aharon Leib Shteinman and the Gerrer Chassidus enjoyed excellent relations- until the issue of the leadership of Chinuch Atzmai came up. Though that issue is no longer relevant- it’s tensions are still felt today, since the Central Party of Gimmel felt that they had lost control of a position that they had held for many years.
On Thursday evening Harav Gershon Edelstein who has been publically announced as the new leader of Degel Hatorah in Bchadrei Charedim last week, has taken the initiative to make peace from within the charedi community by airing the issue directly with Agudas Ysirael’s leading member Health Minister Yakov Litzman, by stating “The time has come to make peace.”
A surprised Litzman responded,” For that (in order to make peace) you need both sides.” Harav Edelstein was prepared for such an answer, and responded,” You already have one side.” Litzman responded that he would have to check into this- and it is doubtful that there is enough time left before Pesach. To which the Rosh Yeshiva, who in the past has often stressed the importance of peace between the parties responded, “If they want- it is possible yet before the Pesach.”
As said above this groundbreaking conversation was publicized here first- and should it come to fruition will become a dramatic turning point that will hopefully lead to peace within the charedi leadership.
