Slaughter on the roads: MK Uri Maklev asked Minister of Transportation Yisrael Katz, “Why hasn’t the National Authority for Road Safety appointed fifteen representatives as required by law?” His failure to do so has effectively robbed the Authority of any ability to act.
According to Maklev, “the National Authority, local authorities and other non-profits work to prevent traffic accidents. Their emphasis is on pedestrians, children, bicycles and crosswalks, because of their significant involvement in traffic accidents.
“Because of budget cuts, the National Authority is not functioning as it should. Its governing board does not convene. This has ramifications on the issue of traffic safety. Accordingly, the Minister of Transportation must work to return the Authority to its systematic work.”
In response to Maklev’s question, Minister Yisrael Katz responded that the Authority lacks representatives because t the government ministries have yet to propose their representatives to the Authority. At the same time, Minister Katz responded, efforts are being made to appoint persons to fill the missing slots.
Katz claims that, “Even though the Authority is not working at full capacity, the National Authority for Traffic Safety is continuing its work as prescribed by law, with the board reporting its work to the Authority representatives. In addition, the Attorney General and the National Authority comptroller oversee its work.”
MK Maklev responded to Minister Katz’ words: “The work of the National Authority for Road Safety is vital to the struggle for prevention of traffic accidents. The fact that its budget has been drastically cut, and the fact that the Board does not convene, impedes its work. This is why the Minister of Transportation must do everything to return the National Authority to its regular work.”
