The fight against junk food: “I hope it isn’t Shabbos that is causing Litzman, the head of Israel’s Department of Health, to speak against us. Litzman’s remarks against McDodalds were heard throughout the world.
ABC and CBS have both reported that Litzman has announced that Israel’s Department of Health will take a stand against junk food. “McDonalds- out! Not in our country.”
Irina Shlomer, the spokesperson for McDonalds told Bchadrey charedim, “Litzman chose to make some very popular statements- but they do not reflect the reality of our franchise. More than a decade ago McDonalds Israel has instituted many health reforms. We cut the fat content of our meat from 18% to 9%, we removed trans fat from our fries, cut out 2/3rds of the saturated fat form all our fired foods, reduced sugar and sodium in all our foods, and were the first in Israel to provide nutritional content information for all our products. Additionally McDonalds has also promoted the drinking of water amongst children.
“If the ministry of Health was really interested in researching this problem, they would come to the realization that McDonalds is part of the solution- and not the problem…I hope that it isn’t our being open on Shabbos that is behind this

Yakov Litzman attacked McDonalds saying that Israel does not need junk food. In the film that was aired on Channel 10, Litzman is heard addressing the annual cardiology convention saying,” It isn’t necessary to eat junk food. McDonalds- out! Not in our country.”
Litzman explained, “ We must educated our youth not to fast food. I know that people don’t like it when “I say this, I know that large companies don’t like it, but I have a secret for you- I don’t have primaries.”
Bchadrey Hacharedim has learned that the announcement and Litzman’s response has come after some large companies began creating pressure to halt this campaign against junk food.
