The fire that seems to have been caused by a private matza baking venture gone wrong has caused serious economic damage. Tens of apartments were seriously damaged causing the collapse of the roof of the apartment complex- which was constructed over 100 years ago according to outdated standards.
Behadrey Haredim has learned that ten apartments were completely destroyed and another 12 are presently inhabitable. The evaluation of the renovations needed in order to allow the residents to return home will take place this coming Monday.
Moishe Lev, a resident of the community told Behadrey, “a number of people came back in order to retrieve whatever clothing was salvageable. The apartments are uninhabitable. There is no electricity, no gas and no water.” According to the way he sees it, it is Kollel Polin’s responsibility to fund the renovations as they are the owners
.
With the help of the municipality of Yerushalyaim, including council member Harav Yitzchak Pindrus, deputy mayor Yossi Deutsch and the social service department , the residents were housed in hotels the last three days. This morning at 10:00 22 families with a total of 88 children checked out of their hotel rooms- regardless of whether or not they had basic clothing or somewhere to go.
Some of the residents left their apartment empty handed wearing only robes and slippers. Others managed to save a thing or two – but all of them have suffered a great monetary loss.
Business interested in donating furniture or house wears are asked to please email the community manager of Bucharim at [email protected].
