Disturbing Facts: Charedi Children are Injured 2.5 Times More Often

Today the Knesset Economics Committee , under the leadership of MK Eitan Kabel, held two hearings about halting the carnage on the road.
The CEO of The National Authority for Road Safety presented the fact that the majority of the injured in the Charedi community are pedestrians. The administrator of the division for road safety of the Misrad Hachinuch , Max Avraham, said that the ministry does not fund road safety programs in the Charedi Private school system, since they do not learn core studies. Kabel responded,” one who is freed from learning core studies is not freed from learning road safety.”
The CEO of the Transportation Ministry, Avner Flohr said that the ministry is currently in the midst of reforming driver’s tests and driver’s ed. They are incorporating more practical topics in the curriculum. He added that they intend to fix up the laws that refer to bus drivers and drives of heavy trucks, and to require them to take a refresher course every five years.
Kabel summed up by saying that the situation is very serious and is totally within our ability to fix. “Every stage of road education must undergo major change . We have to begin the process in those places where the damage is greatest, therefore we need a strong national power for road safety. We need a strong and concentrated police force that is capable of dealing with serious problems.”
