Storm over the Reform Wall: "The compromise at the Western Wall is acceptable to me," says Rabbi of the Old City, Rabbi Avigdor Nevatsal.
"The consulted me," the rabbi said "and the agreement was indeed acceptable to me. The reason I supported the compromise", he went on to explain, "is for lack of choice, since the sword of the Supreme Court is waving above us. I am against any foothold for the Reform and Conservative at the Wall, but it's hard to fight against the Supreme Court which supports them."
• Is the current compromise in its foundation, built according to the decision of Maran Hgr"a Yosef and Hagr"s Elyashiv zt"l of 15 years ago?
"About Harav Ovadia I do not know, but Harav Elyashiv - yes, this was his opinion. No Rabbi is overjoyed at this agreement, it is only because the Supreme Court is going against us."
• Is the current layout basically the same layout as 15 years ago?
"Not exactly, but now as then, we try to do the lesser evil."
• Is there anything one can do to solve this problem against the Reform and Conservatives? What should Haredi representatives to stop the Reform undermining the holy matters of Judaism, should one overthrow the government?
"Overthrowing of the Supreme Court will help greatly, the overthrow of the government would not help and would not help in this matter."
• How would the adoption of the 'Southern Kotel' compromise have implications in the future and cause more damage?
"Who knows? Hashem should have mercy. The Reform have published in many places that they are slowly managing to break down the walls. They wave at it and are pleased with it. I am very afraid that it will also reach other realms and break boundaries further. There is no doubt that no Rabbi is happy with the current situation in which we find ourselves."
