German journalist Beate Klarsfeld, the well-known Nazi hunter, received today, Monday, Israeli citizenship by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, in his Jerusalem office.
Beata Klarsfeld, has been struggling for decades for the apprehension and punishment of Nazi war criminals. In 1974 she received the Medal of Courage of Ghetto Fighters. She was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Beata and her husband, Serge Klarsfeld, are friends of Yad Vashem - and assist in gathering documents to instill the memory of the Holocaust in France. The citizenship is awarded her in recognition of significant contribution to the State of Israel and the Jewish people.
"I am granting Beata Klarsfeld citizenship with pride and excitement," said Dery at the ceremony. "Beata is a brave woman who sustained serious threats and attempts were made to assassinate her because of her courageous activities. Granting Israeli citizenship to Beata has historical justice. The woman who fought the Nazis who aimed to exterminate all of the Jews, is receiving Israeli citizenship from the Jewish state and becoming an Israeli citizen with all that it implies. Her husband Serge and Beata's partner, has been an Israeli citizen. Now both will be able to immigrate to Israel, live with us and we will work to give them back even a little of what they did for the sake of our people and against the Nazi criminals".
Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev, thanked the interior minister for the gesture.
Beata Klarsfeld herself, said at the ceremony: 'I know what my people did to the Jews, and I am proud that I, as a German, built a bridge between Israel and Germany.
