A prosecutor statement was filed today (Tuesday) against a gang of thieves of vehicles, inhabitants of Jerusalem, including both Jews and Arabs.

Following the information received by the police about a gang of vehicle thieves operating nationwide in a sophisticated method who broke into and stole vehicles, an investigation was opened at the central unit squad of Jerusalem.

The findings of the investigation revealed that the gang members, Jewish and Arab residents of Jerusalem, used a sophisticated and calculated method by which they would locate vehicle owners who advertise their cars for sale, set a meeting with them during which they would take the vehicle for a test drive, and receive from the owner the code of the vehicle and keys. When they left for a test drive they performed a rapid replication of the key at a shop of key duplicates, and return the vehicle to its owner. A few days later the car owner discovered that his car was stolen.

The investigation further showed that in some events they were also sprinkle broken glass on the floor of the garage in order to disguise the method of theft and present it as a burglary of the car by smashing a glass window. The vehicles were sold to vehicle chop owners from the territories for hundreds of shekels.

During the investigation and operational activities, detectives arrested the suspects after they stole a vehicle by the same method, started speeding and did not respond to calls to stop and even hit the police car and were stopped by a police roadblock.

As mentioned above, during the last week four gang members were arrested, two Arab residents of East Jerusalem and two Jewish residents of the city, to whom nine events were attributed at this time of the theft of vehicles by the same method.

The arrest of the three suspects was extended today until the 17.2 with a prosecutor statement. Against the fourth suspect a prosecutor's statement was filed separately. The investigation is ongoing.
