Drama in the Knesset - a storm at the Arab MKs' visit to terrorist's home: The Ethics Committee decided tonight (Monday) to suspend for 4 months from the Knesset plenum and committees' deliberations, the Knesset members Hanin Zoabi and Basel Ghattas, and to suspend for two months MK Jamal Zahalka of NDA.
The committee met today and discussed for many hours hundreds of grievances filed by citizens, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, against Balad MKs who conducted a visit to the terrorist's family last week.
It should be noted that the Ethics Committee decision was taken after a long discussion, and after receiving the written comments of members of the Knesset, and after MK Zahalka also appeared before the committee. Knesset members who were suspended will be able to vote in the Knesset and in committees.
Minister Miri Regev responded with regard to the punishment - "I hope and believe that the suspension law which the prime minister promotes will pass in speed legislation and then we can tell them goodbye."
MK Eyal Ben-Reuven of the Zionist Camp, a member of the Knesset Ethics Committee, said that "the Ethics Committee of which I am a member, gave its penalty for a very serious act of Knesset members. Balad MKs' meeting with families of terrorists and standing in memory of the terrorists are acts that encourage and give a boost to murder more Israelis. The Israeli Knesset will not allow its members to use democracy in order to harm the State of Israel and its citizens."
Israel Beitenu chairman, Avigdor Lieberman, commented: "The punishment is a joke. Instead of imposing on them the maximum penalty, suspension from the Knesset sessions for six months and denial of wages, and thus really deter, the Ethics Committee has made the case a parody and determined a punishment which is not really serious and only demonstrates incompetence and weakness. This decision only gives popularity to these Knesset members in their society and does not affect them in any meaningful way.
Lieberman added: 'Anyway, any decision of the Ethics Committee does not alter the substantive matter which is that those MKs should be banned completely from the Knesset - and for good".
As recalled, following the visit of the Arab MKs, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided along with the leaders of the coalition parties to promote a law against the inappropriate conduct of members of the Knesset, which will allow to oust an MK with the support of 90 MKs.
Earlier today it was decided in United Torah Judaism faction meeting in the Knesset to demand changes in the wording of the law, and instead of "inappropriate actions" it will be written "because of support for terrorism, espionage and treason."
