Smuggler of fortune in gold caught on Jordanian border
Tens of kilograms of gold, hundreds of smartphones and packs of steroids hidden away in the car of a representative of the European Union, were discovered by the customs at the Allenby Crossing

An exceptionally large smuggling attempt was prevented by the customs testers at the border with Jordan 'Allenby Crossing, near Jericho.
The SUV owned by the European Union, which is used by a political consultant of the EU delegation to the Middle East, was detained while passing through Jordan to Israel with his driver, a resident of Atarot in northern Jerusalem.
The customs testers initially found in the vehicle dozens of smart mobile phone devices of different types and when deepening the test, found 700 additional smartphones and tens of kilograms of bullion and jewelry made of, allegedly, pure gold.
In addition, ampoules containing steroids prohibited for marketing and which could pose a danger to public health, were caught. The value of seized goods is estimated at about NIS 10 million.
At the end of the search the diplomat and the driver were immediately taken for questioning at the offices of customs and tax investigations in Jerusalem. The diplomat was released and the driver was brought before the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, his detention was extended until Sunday.
