US soldier Bowe Bergdahl, a released prisoner in the exchange deal, after five years of captivity with the Taliban, might serve a life sentence.
The US Army announced tonight (Monday) that Bergdahl, who was captured by Taliban for five years, will be prosecuted for his conduct before captivity.
According to an American military spokesman, Bergdahl will be prosecuted for abandoning his position at the post during his service in Afghanistan, as well as misconduct during meeting with an enemy force.
If convicted of these offenses, the soldier is likely to serve a long sentence.
Bowe Robert Bergdahl, (30) born in Sun Valley, Idaho, USA, served in Battalion No. 1 Infantry Regiment 501, and Division No. 4 of the 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. In June 2009, he abandoned his post and left the post in which he served, and was captured by a Haqani group supported by the Taliban.
His captors demanded in return for his release a million dollars and the release of 21 Afghan prisoners as well as Dr. Efiah Siddiqui. The Taliban published five videos showing him in captivity, and only after five years in May 2014, he was released after mediation between government officials in Qatar to the Taliban, during which five senior Afghan prisoners were released from the Guantanamo prison.
