Is the tension between Russia and Turkey worsening? A potentially explosive incident occurred today (Sunday) in the waters of the Aegean Sea, a Russian destroyer fired warning shots at a Turkish sea vessel which approached it – as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that one of the warships of the Russian navy, the destroyer "Smatlivi" was forced to fire warning shots at the Turkish ship sailing nearby. The Russian Defense Ministry summoned the Turkish military attachế to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
Another Russian news agency reported that the Turkish ship did not respond to previous warnings to stop - and changed its course sharply after the shooting. Reports indicate that the ships were within 500 meters of each other.
