Rishon Lezion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef who is staying over the weekend in Panama, met with the president of Panama Juan Carlos Varela, and thanked him for the assistance he gives to the Jewish community and religious freedom he executes in his country.

"Even in our time it is not clear that Jews can freely move with confidence and full religious freedom, in many countries, even in Western countries, Jews do not feel free and are forced to hide their Jewishness," said Rabbi Yosef.

The president replied: "I am honored to host in my office the Chief Rabbi of Israel. I am indeed of another religion, but I feel as I would feel if the supreme leader of our religion would visit here, out of my respect for religion and its people, I support and encourage freedom of religion. Jews will continue to always feel safe in Panama."

Later, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef told the president about the precarious security situation in Israel and said that when there are negative voices in the world against the State of Israel, support of Israel from countries like Panama is a very important, and a visit by the president to Israel in solidarity will contribute to that.

The President was interested in what was happening in Israel and asked that he shall convey to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his support of Israel, the president added, saying he felt solidarity with the people of Israel and intends to respond to the request of the Rishon Lezion and come in person to demonstrate their support for Israel, "the Israeli people suffer and we will support them," said the president.

After the visit gave Rabbi Yosef gave the President a letter of appreciation and blessing which the president hung in his office next to the keepsake greeting he received from the Pope in the past.
