Found guilty of Rabin's murder: Haredi community

The assassin of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, did so as a graduate of haredi education, says today (Monday), kippa-wearing journalist Yair Sheleg.

This morning in an interview on the program 'All Talk' with Network B, Sheleg, journalist in Makor Rishon and researcher at the Israel Democracy Institute, remarked that one can not tap the action of Yigal Amir on the nature of the national-religious education. "He is certainly not a classic graduate of religious education," he said, "and it is significant since religious Zionist education has national foundations and to this day it has, which neutralize and reduce the risk of such a murder on the part of a religious-Zionist graduate.

"It is no coincidence he passed the haredi route most of his life, and not the religious Zionist one," he added.

He concluded: "I still think the national fundamentals were damaged because of this, and in this context there is a responsibility and not necessarily for religious Zionism."

Yigal Amir was born in Herzliya in 1970 to a religious family. His mother Geula is a kindergarten teacher, and his father, Shlomo Amir, is a Sofer Stam. He was educated at the Chinuch Atzmai school in Herzliya and the Yishuv Yeshiva in Tel Aviv.

After graduating from high school, he studied in the Hesder Yeshiva Kerem Be'Yavne, whereby he served in the IDF as a combat battalion 13 of the Golani Brigade. He went on to study law at Bar-Ilan University.

On 4 November 1995, following the Oslo Accords rally, he assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment.
