A year to murderous slaughter in Har Nof shull: Rabbi Chaim Yechiel Rothman HYD died

A year has passed since the murderous attack at the Bnai Torah shull Har Nof neighborhood in Jerusalem, and tonight (Saturday night) members of the community were informed of the harsh news of a sixth victim in the attack - Rabbi Chaim Yechiel Rothman HYD, who was wounded and hospitalized since the attack unconscious in Levenstein Hospital. On Yom Kippur, due to a deterioration in his condition, he was taken to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, where he died.

Already last year, even though he was alive, his condition was very serious and he lay unconscious in the hospital with significant brain damage. Many supplicated in prayer for the recovery of Rabbi Chaim Yechiel ben Malka Rothman, but as stated today he returned his soul to its Creator at the age of 55 at his demise.

Rabbi Chaim Yechiel HYD was born in Toronto on 7th Tishrei 5721 (1960), and married his wife, also a native of Canada. The couple settled in Israel.

In Israel he studied at the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, where he became a prominent avrech, in the neighborhood he lived he was a member of the Bnai Torah shull. He worked in the office of the State Comptroller, and in the evening he would sit in the shull and study, and was the economic mainstay of the house.

Ten years ago, the family experienced a terrible tragedy when the eldest son fell off his bicycle and was killed in the Jerusalem Forest, and now it has lost the father.

"Despite the tragedy of the passing of his son, Rabbi Rothman would bring joy into his home," say the community of Bnai Torah, "he was one of the most unique in the community who always had a smile on his face, as one could see on the children in spite of the terrible tragedy of his family. He was very loved by the community and his death is painful in addition to the tragedy of the community a year ago."

Liquidation of the terrorists after the attack

As recalled, the attack took place on twenty-fifth of Cheshvan last year, two terrorists armed with pistols and knives broke into the minyan at the Bnai Torah synagogue, and murdered in cold blood Rabbi Moshe Twersky 59, Rosh Yeshiva of Toras Moshe, Rabbi Aryeh Kopinsky 43, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg, 68, and Rabbi Kalman Levin. Later a Druze police officer who was shot during the fire exchange with the terrorists, also died of his wounds.

The deceased is survived by eleven children, the youngest of whom is only four years old. The eldest granddaughter was born shortly after the attack.

His funeral will travel tonight (Saturday night) at 22:00 from the B'nai Torah shull in Jerusalem's Har Nof neighborhood to the Mount of Rest where he will be buried next to his late son Eliyahu Mordechai z"l.

May his soul be bound in the bond of life.
