The OU Organization, the umbrella organization of Orthodox communities in the US, published Tuesday (Monday) a statement condemning the proposal of UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to declare the Western Wall as part of the Al Aqsa Mosque and to include it in the list of Muslim holy sites .
Palestinians also require UNESCO to approve and declare that the Cave of the Patriarchs and Rachel's Tomb (the so-called grave of Bilal ibn Rabah) are part of Palestine. The plan was presented to the Chairman of UNESCO by representatives of Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and it will be brought to a vote next week.
The condemnation statement issued by the OU organization stated inter alia: "This shameful decision completely ignores the historical connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, a site that is part of the ancient temple built more than two thousand years ago, this decision is a brazen attempt to rewrite history, and will fuel further violence and terrorism against Israeli civilians . We call on the international community to recognize the absurdity of the proposal".
