Barkat: "children were abandoned - no school"

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and the chairman of the Jerusalem municipal parents Paz Cohen, announced today (Tuesday), that he will disable the school education system in Jerusalem gradually starting from Thursday, if the office of internal security, finance and education did not arrange for such budgeting for securing educational institutions in need of such security, according to police guidelines.

The strike will begin on Thursday in all secondary schools in the city and will be expanded later in other educational institutions as needed, until a solution is found.

Mayor Nir Barkat said: "We waited too long for a budget response to the security of the children of the city. In the reality that exists today, a further delay means abandoning our children. The security threats do not end at 13:30, so it is ridiculous to release the guards as long as the children are in educational institutions".

Chairman of Jerusalem PTA Paz Cohen added: "We ask for minimal protection for our children - a responsible and trained adult at the entrance to all educational institutions throughout the day. If, G-d forbid, something terrible happened, the budget which will be transferred will be several times larger. So why wait?"

By the government's decision in past years, the state pays the security of educational institutions, but in actuality the state funds security only until 13:30 pm and not in all nursery schools, with most of the city's educational institutions studies are until 16:30. This creates an intolerable gap when at some hours of the day there is no security in educational institutions in Jerusalem.
