It was a surprise to no one expected in the care beds warehouse of Yad Sarah. A bed which was purchased and used, was returned to the warehouse as a donation this time. Israel Ehrend, director of Yad Sarah beds storehouse, checked the integrity of the elaborate bed, as he lifted the mattress cover he found zipper. How great was his shock when he unzipped it and found a makeshift "safe", a cache with thousands of dollars in cash, gold jewelry and watches.
After he recovered from the surprise, without thinking twice, Israel rushed to perform the mitzvah of hashavas aveida which came his way, just as any other volunteer in Yad Sarah would do without hesitation. He located the donor, who was amazed by the discovery of the lost items, no less by the sincerity and desire to return it to its owner.
Rabbi Uri Lupolianski, founder and president of Yad Sarah, praised Israel Ehrend for his act. "This is the way of Yad Sarah, one mitzvah leads to another mitzvah, one chessed activity brings on another. Fortunate are you, you have the merit."
Within hours the donor and his wife came to the Yad Sarah building in Jerusalem. "People told me that the bed is worth a lot of money and I should sell it. I told them that my father had donated his entire life - and I will donate the bed. In the past we have been helped a lot by Yad Sarah and my friends also suggested that I donate it to Yad Sarah. I called them and a few days later they came to pick it up. Eventually the donation came back to me..." he said excitedly.
The son added: "My father was a known goldsmith in Tel Aviv. We gave him a bracelet he made for my wife and we wanted him to fit it for our daughter. After his death we searched and could not find it. We are so excited it's back. Apart from the fair, these jewels have a sentimental value. Yad Sarah are tzaddikim, one does not see such things. If we would not have donated to Yad Sarah, at any other station, we would not get these things back."
