Shabbos desecrations at football games: Minister of Culture and Sport, MK Miri Regev offers this evening (Tuesday), a compromise of her own related to games and the opening of the league on Shabbos.

At her suggestion groups who do want to play on Shabbat, will not play on Shabbat, groups who do want, will be able to do so.

According to Regev, "Unfortunately at this time there is no solution to the league starting as planned, in recent days I have been holding intensive talks with the Attorney General so that he would allow no enforcement policy for sixty days, during which we will establish an inter-ministerial team headed by the Director General of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, who will lead compromise with the union, the management, the Ministry of Finance, Toto (lottery) and football teams.

"The compromise has a clear principle: groups that do not want to play on Shabbat, who want to rest and observe Shabbat - will not play on Shabbat and no one will impose on them. Groups who want to play on Shabbat - will be able to play and enjoy football on Shabbat.

"I know that a compromise of this sort will cost money, and I'm willing to pay what is required so that in a Jewish state, people will be able to observe Shabbat, I am willing to pay so that people take a day off per week. Now it seems that the opening of the league will be prevented and the status quo of 60 years will be violated. Only the Attorney General Weinstein can prevent this".
