How did spawns get into Tnuva packing?

YNET website published this morning (Mon.) a serious case of kashrus fraud, which also caused considerable economic damage to catering which ordered the product. This is a case where in a package of kosher cod fish, under the cod there were three layers of squid heads, in a shipment which came from Tnuva.

According to the publication, in some of the cartons stamped for kashrus, which were opened by the kashrus inspectors and employees, only heads of squid were found.

The catering company in question is located in the Beit Shemesh area, and provides hundreds of rations a day.

Rafi Yochai, director of enforcement and fraud by the Chief Rabbinate, told YNET that the error caused all utensils used to prepare the "fish" to become treif.

According to him, despite the seal of approval on the cartons of Tnuva, "There were some cartons which contained only calamari, despite the inscription which clearly stated these are cod, including the stamp of kashrus. In one only the top layer was cod, and underneath there were three layers of squid."

Yohai received an immediate report of the unusual incident and immediately left Whatsapp messages to all the inspectors in central kitchens provided the same product by Tnuva, to oversee this phenomenon did not repeat itself. However, Yohai stresses that the problem occurred only in shipments to large institutions, rather than private consumers.

Tnuva responded: "There was a hitch at the supplier in South America. We have warned the supplier and the factory that if immediate steps are not taken to prevent malfunctions, we will not continue to purchase from them the fish. The product does not reach private consumers at all."
