Satisfaction within the Jewish community in Belgium, following the announcement by Interior Minister Jan Shimbun today (Tuesday) that, following the dramatic rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Europe in general and Belgium in particular, the government approved the Belgian budget of 4 million euros to upgrade security in Jewish institutions, synagogues, facilities and Jewish educational institutions in Brussels and Antwerp.
The minister said this morning on television program VRT Flemish state, and explained of the installation of security cameras in Jewish buildings, shielding windows and doors.
It should be noted that since the attack on Charles Hebdo in France, ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in Antwerp and Brussels are secured by soldiers permanently stationed at the gates of the institutions.
Antwerp activists say the sum of four million euros be allocated from the budget of 200 million euros allotted by the interior minister for security concerns.
Several months ago, an anonymous attacked an avrech in Antwerp on his way to morning prayers, the unknown stabbed the 31-year-old yeshiva student in the neck and fled, police were unable to capture the perpetrator despite testimonies of eyewitnesses, and the description of the perpetrator.
About a month ago the Jewish community in Belgium was outraged, when a Belgian police, a Lanbik City resident, spoke strongly against Jews and made it clear that he has no problem "to kill them one by one," as he put it. He went on to write that "the word itself says a dirty Jew. I do not owe you any respect while I was there in Israel, frankly, I would have done with the Jews what they do with the Palestinians, killing them one by one." Although the police officer was fired immediately and prosecuted, but the mere thought that a policeman is supposed to ensure the security of all residents, declaring that he was ready to kill Jews, sparked outrage and shock among Jewish organizations in Belgium.
