'Hamodia' about attack on officer: Chilul Hashem and contribution of incitement

The attack of a religious officer last Friday in Mea Shearim, Jerusalem, brought about condemnation from haredi MKs who sent messages one by one. However, the Haredi press party, except for the newspaper Hamodia, no one reported the extreme incident.

In an editorial entitled "Desecration of G-d and contributing to incitement" it was written at the beginning of the article: "Even if assuming that not all information provided in the media are accurate, and if we estimate the descriptions attributed to the officer in uniform, who came to visit two soldiers living in Mea Shearim in Jerusalem - and was attacked by a group of haredi Jews screaming at him 'Hardak' etc. - are exaggerated; the event is yet, in any dimension, blatant, halachically unacceptable, has no place, it has no backing from any religious authority and whoever took part in it deserves every denunciation and condemnation".

"The struggle of the Haredi public against forced conscription and incriminating of Torah scholars, has nothing to do and no connection to the behavior of the type in question, no one has the right to attack soldiers for being soldiers; no one has the right to shame them just like that in public; and anyone who does so - does not speak for the haredi public; does not serve its purposes; does not represent its values and way of life. Our argument with are secular in outlook, should not be helped by personally attacking soldiers in uniform, whoever they may be.

"The world view of the haredi community, its mind and its positions in public affairs and struggles for the soul of the nation and the future generation's hopes, are expressed, lead and represented by our rabbis, Gedolei and Meorei Yisroel shlita, by whose light we go. Only they and not others. Not the frivolous of any kind, and not those who adopt violent ways to fight those frivolous. Our determination and devotion to our rabbis' teachings, does not need reinforcements of this miserable kind".

"These things must be clear and bright, even on the outside, before the public who are exposed to incitement against the haredi community caused by those irresponsible and who are mistaken – with the encouragement of the media - to think that they represent the haredi community and its ways, and they must also be pointed internally".

"We have no part in this kind of behavior, and these acts are judged by their outcome; they cause terrible Chilul Hashem; they cause shame and tremendous damage and wild incitement".
