Egypt confirmed that the Australian journalist Peter Grest, was released a little while ago from an Egyptian prison and deported to his country. The release followed a direct order of the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Grest was detained with his team since December 2013 after covering the clashes between Egyptian security forces and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Jazeera Network International.

Last summer the trial sentenced him to seven years in prison. Maher Muhammad and Muhammad Fahmi, two members of his staff, also were sentenced to lengthy prison terms, and it is unclear what will now happen to them.

His release came after heavy diplomatic pressure by governments in Australia and Canada, as well as by the US and much of the world media.

After the saga of diplomacy and international media campaign for his release the pressure did the trick, despite the regime's loathing to Al Jazeera and Qatar in particular, and as mentioned, today he was released and deported to Australia.
