Israeli citizens woke up today (Sunday) to a rainy morning in the north and center, but the rain stopped in the afternoon and tomorrow will stop completely. On Tuesday evening the rain will return – with a significant storm which will probably bring to snow in the northern mountains and mountains of the center.
This morning rain will fall occasionally in the north and centre and there is a fear of flooding in prone areas. Following the rain, the morning traffic is expected to be particularly slow. Later in the day it will be partly cloudy to cloudy and the rain will gradually weaken.
Tomorrow (Monday), the rain will stop completely but the break will not last long. As of Tuesday evening, winds will increase and rain will return. A substantial cooling is expected and stormy weather will accompany us on Wednesday and Thursday. The forecast is of heavy rainfall along the coastal plain and snow in the mountains of the north and central Israel.
On Friday, the US Embassy issued a travel warning to Israel towards the storm. The embassy statement noted that in the coming days, 5-10 January, stormy weather conditions are expected in Israel, including the accumulation of snow, so one should "consider the postponement of non-essential travel to areas that may be affected by the weather."
It added that "there was a similar weather at that time of the year in 2014 and led to the closure of highways, stuck drivers, areas which became isolated and difficult and hazardous driving conditions."
And: "If you are required to travel in these conditions you should double-check that you have a full tank car, packed warm clothes, boots, water, shovel and food supplies in case you are stuck. If you get stuck with a car it is advisable to stay inside and call the police for help."
