Mario Como, former governor of New York and father of the current governor, passed away • links with the Jews started when he served as the Shabbos Goy of the Bronx
On Friday, Mario Como, former Governor of New York and father of Andrew Como, who is now governor, passed away.
Mario died on the day his son was sworn in for a second term role of the New York governor.
Mario Como was first appointed to the position of Governor of New York with the support of the Haredi community. Como used to tell that in his youth he served as Shabbos Goy for the Jewish community in the Bronx.
He used to say 'I loved to help Jewish neighbors' and as governor was happy to continue helping them.
Mario Como, 82, was first elected governor in 1982, over the years he rejected several times proposals to compete for the presidency.
City Councilman David Greenfield responded: "I send my condolences to the family, we lost a close friend, it is a loss for the entire community."
Agudath Israel of America also published a Statement on the death, "During his tenure Como was a true friend of the Jewish community and of Agudath Israel of America and was a great help to it. Como was a close friend of the president of Agudath Israel of America, Rabbi Moshe Sherer z"l - even before he was appointed to his role," the wording of the statement.
