Shas drama reaches a climax: Aryeh Deri presented tonight (Tuesday) a letter of resignation from the Knesset to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein.

Resigning Shas chairman Aryeh Deri submitted a letter of resignation from the Knesset to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein. The two signed the letter and Edelstein said to Deri: "My heart is with you in the storm that you are going through."

Shas Chairman was accompanied on his way by all members of the Shas party.

Before resigning, Deri attended a meeting of members of the Shas faction in the Knesset. The faction members tried to convince him to retract his resignation but to no avail.

The resignation is a continuation of the dramatic resignation letter sent yesterday by Aryeh Deri to a meeting of the council of Torah Sages, in which he announces his resignation as head of the party.

Deri's place in the Knesset will be filled by the next in line, Lior Edri, in charge of shchitah of BADATZ Beit Yosef.

As reported in Behadrey Haredim, earlier today Deri visited the homes of the council members Hagaon R' Shgalom Cohen, Hagaon R' S. Baadani, Hagaon R' David Yosef and Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Maya - after not being present last night when council members came to his house to strengthen him upon completion of the meeting of the council.

It should be noted that Deri's retirement does not mean necessarily that the matter was closed - until the date of submission of lists for the next Knesset. The current retirement is insignificant because the Knesset is currently in election break and meets on exceptional cases.
