Wave of arrests in Ramat Gan: dozens of city officials arrested

A wave of arrests in the municipality of Ramat Gan: Police task force to combat government corruption exposes suspected corruption among the Ramat Gan municipality officials. Police also foiled an attempt during the undercover investigation an "intrusion" into the municipality by factors associated with criminal activities of criminal elements.

The 433 Lahav Unit / Fraud Squad is conducting an investigation in cooperation with Yahalom Unit and Investigations of VAT in the Tax Authority, concerning suspicion of bribery, election bribery, fraud and breach of trust, money laundering and tax fraud by the Ramat Gan municipality officials and others involved.

It is suspected that municipal officials promised jobs in the municipality and work supply to various parties in exchange for help in promoting the election of a candidate for mayor in the last elections to local authorities, which took place in October 2013.

This morning, after a lengthy and complex undercover investigation, the unit detained for questioning over twenty suspects involved, some senior municipal employees - and searched the offices of the municipality, in the suspects' homes and offices.

A police spokesman said that the Attorney General and the Chief of Police were updated on the investigation and the investigation is managed with close monitoring of the head of Lahav 433 and head of investigations and intelligence.

A decision concerning the arrest or detention extension of the suspects will be taken later depending on the development of the investigation.

Police said further that the investigation is at its start and at this stage it can not give any more details.
