Alois Brunner, an SS officer who served as the personal assistant of the odious Adolf Eichmann, and who was considered for many years a wanted Nazi criminal, worked for decades for Hafez al-Assad and probably died at the age of 98 - four years ago in Damascus, reveals today (Sunday) Dr. Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Zuroff added that the organization "has been informed of the former German secret agent, who served in the Middle East". He said Brunner was buried in Damascus.
According to the estimates of the Institute, approximately -128 500 Jews were sent to death camps by Brunner, 47 thousand Jews from Austria, 44 thousand Jews from Greece, 23.5 thousand Jews from France and 14 thousand Jews from Slovakia.
