This week, on Monday, an Israeli Jew was attacked on a subway platform in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This morning (Wednesday) New York City police force arrested one of the suspects in the attack.
The Israeli tourist, 53, was on Broadway - Williamsburg Mercy Train Station at about 3:45 at night, when three young men approached him from behind and started to attack him. He was badly bruised, yet refused to go to the hospital.
The brutal attack took place in front of dozens of non-Jewish passengers waiting on the platform and seeing what is happening. An older man who was watching and tried to help the haredi Jew was also beaten as well as a train station employee who tried to interfere.
This morning (Wednesday) a 15 year old, who is suspected of organizing the attack with two friends, was arrested. The Hate Crimes Task Force is still searching for two other attackers. The boy's name was banned for publication because of his young age, and the police plans to arrest the two accomplices through the security film documenting the event.
The suspect admitted that he attacked and spat on the haredi Jew. "He looked at me, so I got mad and attacked him," the suspect said to detectives when arrested. The boy is accused of attacking a cancer patient in light of a hate crime, and he was released on probation under the responsibility of the mother.
Council Member Steven Levine, who represents the district where the attack occurred, said to JP website: "I am very grateful to the New York police force and Hate Crimes Force for the implementation of a rapid and thorough investigation, as a result of their actions the main suspect was arrested this morning."
"It was a terrifying and disturbing assault, it is even more disturbing that the person arrested is so young," said Levine.
