An armed robbery took place yesterday in the diamond district of New York, which houses the offices of many Jewish diamond merchants.
The diamond district on 47th Street in Manhattan looked yesterday (Tuesday) as a battleground; a robber managed to get to a jewelry store on the eighth floor of a building in the heart of the district, injuring one person and escaping with jewelry worth two million dollars.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the robbers managed to get through the building's security measures and penetrate a watches store which is located on the eighth floor.
One of the robbers was used as a lookout and a friend posed as a messenger boy, got into the room, injured the business owner, shot his father and fled.
Mordechai Rubin, a diamond merchant who was nearby, said, "I just got back to the office from mincha, when suddenly I heard a shot from the building. I watched what was happening from my office, and I saw how in a moment the place turned into a battlefield, policemen with guns stormed the building, the street was closed to traffic, no one was allowed to enter the street. Even business owners returning from mincha were not allowed to enter. The police announced over the loudspeaker and warned not to go out of the stores.
"The fear was that the robbers were hiding on the roof. Dogs and helicopters were brought in. Only later things cleared, when an ambulance was allowed to enter and treat the wounded, the owner's father, who was wounded in the head.
"On this street, the offices of most Haredi diamond merchants are located, there is no meshulach who is not familiar with the street"
