Conversion storm: Netanyahu summoned the chief rabbis

After approval of conversion bill yesterday in the afternoon of the Knesset Constitution Committee, this morning (Tuesday) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Israel's Chief Rabbis Hgr"y Yosef and Hgr"d Lau for a meeting on the issue of conversion law.

The appointment was made in order to reach a compromise agreed upon by the Chief Rabbinate, which is expected to take place in the afternoon in Jerusalem.

Chief Rabbinate officials said this morning in a conversation with Behadrey Haredim that the Prime Minister understood it is impossible to pass a law relating to the Ministry of Health without the consent of the minister, so too it is impossible to convey the conversion without the consent of the chief rabbis. And that they "hope to reach an agreement acceptable to the rabbis."

It should be noted that the Chief Rabbis did not even consent to the offer of the government decision-making regarding conversion, and certainly not the law approved yesterday.

Recall Law Committee yesterday approved the constitution after the Arab Knesset members were absent from the deliberations of the committee and because it was under agreement with the Minister of Education Shay Piron. Among Orthodox MKs yesterday there was disappointment upon the Arab MKs not arriving. "It was a mistake to work with them on issues they care about," said a senior at Yahadut Hatorah.
