"Makeover in Boro Park": Interview from New York's political battle

"If I'm elected I will be the representative of the world's largest concentration of Jews after Israel," says Rabbi Nachman Caller in a special interview Behadrey Haredim, candidate for seat in the Legislature of the State of New York.

Orthodox New York is in a stir over a turbulent close struggle to the throne of Orthodox neighborhoods representative to the legislature of the State of New York. For 32 years Dov Hikind has served as Assemblyman on behalf of the 48th District which includes the neighborhoods of Boro Park and Flatbush.

But for the first time these elections a Haredi candidate is running against Hikind: the business man Rabbi Nachman Caller.

Boro Park walls were covered with giant ads on behalf of the two candidates and activists are holding a vigorous battle over the orthodox vote. One who happens to be these days in the neighborhood might think for a moment he is in the stormy and passionate Israeli elections. But despite the media hype, the candidates actually respect each other, and supporting camps are conducted in a relaxed manner.

Both candidates have also been received at great Rebbes in the United States. Some openly expressed support for a particular candidate, and some prefer to remain neutral.

Hikind is facing the challenger Rabbi Nachman Caller, a talmid chochom who wrote numerous books and also reached out to businesses and holds a law firm and accounting office on 13th Avenue in Boro Park.

Towards the elections to be held next Tuesday, we went into his office to hear about his candidacy and chances in face of the veteran Hikind.
