First Published: Behadrey Haredim learned from the associates of MK Eli Yishai, that over the last few days the former Shas chairman has been acting strongly among members of the electoral body to support the Rishon Letzion Hagaon R' Shlomo Amar as Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem.
As mentioned, there are two more days to submit candidacy to the Jerusalem Rabbinate, and so far those who applied for the post of Chief Sephardi Rabbi are: son-in-law of Harav Ovadia Yosef - Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Toledano, and Rabbi Chaim Amsallem. For the post of Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi – Hagaon Rabbi Eliyahu Schlesinger and Rabbi Aryeh Stern, whose candidacy is questionable, due to a number of legal problems for his rabbinical suitability.
Moreover, Behadrey Haredim learned that in the last days, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat visited Harav Amar in his house and asked him that he will run for the position of Chief Rabbi for the benefit of Jerusalem, and will receive full support.
In addition, a significant number of members of the electoral body in Jerusalem entered the residence of Harav Amar and tried to persuade him to run for the rabbinate.
It should be noted that a complete disconnection exists between Harav Amar and the current leadership of Shas these days, despite reports of attempts to approach mediation between the parties, which in turn have not presented a candidate for the post of Chief Sephardi Rabbi, when among the names is the son of Harav Ovadia Yosef, Hagaon Rabbi David Yosef, who serves as rabbi of the Har Nof neighborhood.
