Police in Mumbai, India revealed yesterday (Sunday) the level of security around synagogues and Jewish institutions in the city, following a threat letter sent to the Police Commissioner on Friday and written in English and Hindi, which stated that in response to Israel's offensive in Gaza, synagogues and Jewish institutions in the city will be attacked from Friday night.

Marrakech Murray police commissioner, said police are treating the threats seriously because many young residents of Mumbai joined the Army in Iraq and the Syrian army.

"We do not take risks since the murder in Mumbai; we take threats with utmost seriousness. On Friday I got word to all the police stations across the city about the threats," said the police commissioner.

In Mumbai there are currently seven synagogues - mostly Chabad.

Response to the threat of terrorism in India, it was decided several months ago to establish a security control center 24 hours a day to monitor CCTV security cameras at seven synagogues and Jewish centers in the city. The control room is located at the Tiferet Israel Jacob Synagogue Square, and is staffed 24 hours by young veterans. Updates come in the room for 24 hours from six other synagogues - Knesset Eliyahu Goda, Knesset Calais, Shaarei Rachamim, Etz Chaim, Shaarei Razon, Magen David and Magaen David Chassidim.
