Conciliatory statement from Hamas leader? Khaled Mashaal, head of the political wing of the terrorist organization, explained yesterday (Sunday) that the organization was willing to "live with Jews." However, Mashaal said that he is not willing to accept the presence of "occupiers", alluding to Hamas' demand to end the occupation of the territories seized by Israel in the Six-Day War.

Following discussions of a ceasefire, Hamas stressed that the ceasefire should be based on the lifting of the blockade off Gaza. He cautioned that the Palestinians "can not coexist" with their neighbors while the land is occupied, as he said.

Mashaal, who was interviewed last night by the American media channel PBS from Doha, capital of Qatar, repeated the Hamas position which does not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, adding that "only a future Palestinian state which is not occupied, can determine whether to recognize Israel."

"We are not fanatics or fundamentalists, we are not fighting the Jews because they are Jews - we are fighting against the occupiers," added the head of Hamas' political wing, whom Israel once tried to assassinate.

Mashaal condemned the operation "Solid Rock", which he called "collective punishment." Then he denounced Netanyahu for the failure of political talks, "He killed our hopes and dreams, and the American initiative." He then declared his immediate demands of Israel: "We need an airport and sea port, one has to remove the blockade. To end the bloodshed, one must stop the occupation."
