Shay Piron initiates: Small Talmudei Torah with core curriculum

The Ministry of Education headed Minister Shai Piron is considering: opening of small Talmudei Torah schools and financing them in return for core curriculum studies, as reported by Ha'aretz newspaper.

The Ministry of Education is considering allowing the opening of small Talmudei Torah of 150-200 students only, which will study partial core curriculum. The urriculum will include courses in English, mathematics and Hebrew in full. As for the other core subjects - literature, civics, history, science and Tanach, there are negotiations about the scope of study.

After the Ministry of Education despaired of dramatic change in the education system of the Talmudei Torah, the ministry transferred its hopes the slow development of institutions with core studies using small institutions.

Haredi entrepreneurs interested in establishing such Talmudei Torah, demand to open schools for every 80 students, while the minimum allowed is 250 students. But the Ministry of Education currently sets the number at 200 students, and is also expected to agree to 150 students.

Meanwhile, Talmudei Torah which now receive a budget of 55% -75% of that of the public schools, receive only 35% of the budget if they do not agree to teach core subjects, after Peron signed a regulation which does not allow a budget of more than 35% of an educational institution that does not teach the core curriculum.

It is also reported by Ha'aretz that to make sure that Haredim do meet the requirements, all schools will be required to take full tests - including international tests and Meitzav.

What is interesting is that senior officials in the Ministry of Education asserts that the news is not correct, and that the information posted in it is wrong.

At the same time, the Ministry continues its efforts to move the kindergarten network of Chinuch Atzmai and Ma'ayan Hachinuch Hatorani attended by about 100,000 children, to complete management of the Ministry of Education or the local authorities and make them part of the Haredi-state educational system.
