A few days ago Rabbi Menachem Mendel Horowitz Chabad emissary in Kenton in Massachusetts learned, that a Jew died in his city. Rabbi Horowitz did not pause, turned immediately to the family and offered to help with the burial arrangements. To his amazement he found that the family - originally from Russia, intends to burn the body of the deceased and send the ashes for burial in Kaliningrad, Russia.
Mobilizing all his powers of persuasion, he managed to dissuade the family from carrying out the terrible deed, and obtained funds to cover expenses for burial and have the body flown to Russia. At the same time, he turned to Zaka Russia, and they arranged all these matters for burial in Kaliningrad.
After the procedure, and the preparation of all required paperwork, the body was flown from the U.S. to Moscow with Mitaskim Company, and from there to Kaliningrad. Funeral took place last Friday, by the city Rabbi and emissary of Kaliningrad and Chabad, Rabbi David Soodik.
At the same time, Zaka - Russia learned about a young Jewish Israeli citizen, who died suddenly a few days ago in Russia. Along with the burial society of Moscow, headed by the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Hgr"b Lazer - took care of the deceased, made contact with his family and organized all the funeral arrangements as required, in cooperation with the Israeli consulate. The youngster was buried last Friday at the cemetery in Moscow.
Another tragic case occurred when a Jew died Thursday morning while trying to extinguish a fire that broke out in his home. Prior to Shabbos the organization operated at the fire scene, to hold a funeral for the Jew who perished, and bring him to a Jewish burial as quickly as possible.
