Heavy gunfire erupted tonight (Thursday) between the IDF and terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip after a serious incident on the Gaza border: Five soldiers were wounded - one of them critically, when an explosive device was activated at a force of Yahalom unit of the IDF, operating in the Kissufim area for the purpose of blasting a terror tunnel exposed a few weeks ago.
The IDF Spokesman said: "During the night the IDF detonated in a controlled manner, part of the terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip that was discovered earlier this month in order to destroy another terrorist infrastructure of Hamas and remove the threat posed to residents of the State of Israel by this tunnel.
"During the operation, a bomb was detonated at an IDF force resulting in five wounded soldiers: one soldier was seriously wounded, another soldier was wounded in a medium condition and three soldiers were lightly injured. The casualties were evacuated by helicopter for further medical treatment in hospital.
"The families were notified.
"In response the IDF force opened fire at the terrorists found in a nearby spot, a hit was identified. Later, the IDF using aircraft of the Air Force attacked an attack tunnel in southern Gaza. A precise hit at the target was identified.
"Hamas violated the agreements of Pillar of Cloud, and makes offensive operations in Israel in building tunnels. Hamas is in control in Gaza and bears the responsibility to prevent terrorism of any kind. IDF will continue to act to remove the threats posed to residents of the State of Israel and the security forces."
Two of the five soldiers who were wounded are Engineering Corps officers from Southern Command, one is a Lieutenant Colonel and the other a Major. The two were lightly injured .
According to Palestinian sources , the Air Force's bombing in Khan Younis tonight killed five terrorists from the Az Addin al-Qassam Brigades, they said, the Air Force attacked the town with heavy artillery.
Due to hostile activities of terrorists in the Gaza Strip border and shooting at IDF forces which responded to the sources of fire, an alert level was raised in the south and there are alerts of rockets from Gaza.
Military sources said that today exactly a year has passed since the assassination of Hamas army chief, Ahmed Jabari, and the opening of Operation Pillar of Cloud.
Earlier an alarm was sounded in Adam, on suspicion of penetration of three people into the community through the northern fence. Residents were asked to stay inside. The alarm activated in the settlement was also heard in the nearby neighborhoods of Neve Yaakov and Pisgat Zeev in Jerusalem.
After a while life went back to normal.
