Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron, has instructed the yeshiva department of the Ministry of Education Department over the last few days to act firmly against kollelim who suspend students on the basis of political solidarity, which is against the law. Kollelim which are found to violate the law are expected to be denied the support of the Ministry of Education.
The directive comes after a series of complaints received by the office of the Minister from Haredi avreichim who argue that steps have been taken against them, including threats of suspension, due to their political affiliation.
Education Minister, Rabbi Shai Piron, said: "We will not allow activists to make the educational institutions into their home political arena and harass students, whether in schools or kollels. The Haredi public, as all sectors in Israel, deserves a vocational training system and equality. Those who refuse to accept that will not be budgeted."
A letter sent today by the directive of the Minister to all heads of kollelim, states: "We received complaints that institutions suspended some of their students as those intended to vote or voted in the municipal elections for the list that is not according to the spirit of the institution's administration...
"Institutions which it turns out that used coercive measures taken against students to vote or refrain from voting for one party or another, or harmed students and discriminated against them in accordance with their own convictions to vote, measures may be taken against them, and their support may be affected."
According to the letter, harassment of students following political affiliation violates the procedure for support of the Ministry of Education, and the Local Authorities (Elections).
