Defeat to Orthodox mission: Knesset approves this evening (Monday) by second and third reading the Law of Marriage Registration areas, known as the Zohar Law.
By law, registration areas open to marriage and divorce anywhere in the country. 54 Knesset members supported the proposal, 17 opposed and 1 avoided.
The bill was initiated in the 18th Knesset by MKs Faina Kirshenbaum, Zeev Elkin and Eitan Cabel and former Knesset member Einat Wilf - and passed by first reading at plenary session, while resisting the religious faction.
Proposal was promoted - by the religious services minister and his deputy Naftali Bennett MK Rabbi Eli Ben - Dahan from Habayit Hayehudi.
His Facebook page wrote: "Authorization of the law helps each of the 35,000 couples who marry in Israel every year, and within this revolution each couple can choose the place where he can register the marriage."
MK Moshe Gafni attacked the law, saying it will be difficult to control the registration of marriage: "We cannot believe the rabbinate. They will say it's a sham, "he said." This is an endless problem. There will be tragedies. We will have to keep genealogy books.
"You're not religious," He snapped at the Habayit Hayehudi party, "you're going to completely dismantle the subject of marriage registration. Shame that a party that claims to be called religious harms rabbis as well as its own rabbis. Everything to please? Everything to stick to you chairs? Are Jewish religious issues not at all important to you. You do not mind harming the rabbinate. I would blush with shame to support such a law. "
MK Gafni warned that as retaliation for the law the Orthodox will support the evacuation of settlements."Come and say that this is the land of Israel? So What! You hurt all that is dear to us. You harmed the Torah of Israel".
MK Yaakov Asher (Yahadut Hatorah), also attacked the bill and said, "There is a competition who can design the Torah and halacha by spirit of the communication, spirit of the streets and the spirit of people who do not believe in halacha."
